alex j. mann (.com): In Love With Tragedy: Do You Need The Eggs?

It's not necessarily geographically cultural as much as it is an industrially culture thing. Though you are right that industries tend to locate regionally. I'd throw politics and Washington DC (where I live) into the mix as well. Technology Industry culture probably transcends the geographical limitations of its industry more than the others you mention, simply b/c the nature of the internet allows it to do so.

To illustrate a point: I'm on Twitter and I love it. I only personally know about 10 of the people I follow - and who follow me. We have never once discussed or even mentioned follower count. I do work in media/web, so I guess I'm an outlier. But none of my friends do, so it makes sense for them not to engage in a conversation like above.

It's a bit discouraging to see the exhibitionist, look-at-me nature of social media replace the loftier goals of the medium. But you're right. We're probably all nuts anyway.

I culture is the easiest target. But, the technology simply accentuates are
existing behaviors. My entire post was a hyperbole to create an entertaining
point. I'm sure there is tons of crossover to the political, ladder climbing
    culture in DC as well.

Writing about the ridiculousness of it all is my way of remaining aware of it.
